Observations after Round 6 (see picture - click below for larger graphic)
- Nothing exciting at this early stage
- All teams can theoretically finish on top or the bottom
- Changes start to appear at Round 11-12 onwards

I have written some software that looks at the AFL ladder and all the remaining games and calculates where each team can possibly finish, based on their remaining games and the possible game results of their competitors.
This is something that is often considered during the final rounds each year as teams jockey for position to see who can make the final 8, who is guaranteed a spot, who may finish on top of the ladder etc etc. It is a difficult task to calculate from too many weeks out due to the number of possible combinations of results but I have used a mixture of logic, programming and computing power to establish the possible outcomes.
The calculations are:
- If a team WINS all of their remaining games, how HIGH can they possibly finish?
- If a team WINS all of their remaining games, how LOW might they still fall?
- If a team LOSES all of their remaining games, how HIGH can they still climb?
- If a team LOSES all of their remaining games, how LOW can they possibly finish?

(Assumptions – A team is capable of reaching the top/bottom of a group based on their percentage when points are equal. No consideration of how likely/unlikely a combination of results are, just that the results ARE mathematically possible)
As we move past the midway point of the season, are these results something that you would be interested in seeing on a weekly basis to contribute to the paper, club, publication or website to help see how teams may possibly fare by the end of the season?
Please let me know and I will be happy to send these results after each round finishes as we move further through the season.
